Dowland's masterpiece, written for five viols, comprises 'Seaven Teares,' slow and contemplative pieces that are interspersed with livelier movements. The composer himself explains that 'The teares which Musicke weeps' can be pleasant; 'neither are teares shed always in sorrow but sometime in joy and gladnesse.'
This work is presented alongside a selection of English lute songs by Dowland and his contemporaries.
