Dowland: Lachrimae, or Seven Tears

  • Hampstead Parish Church Church Row London, England, NW3 United Kingdom (map)

Dowland's masterpiece, written for five viols, comprises 'Seaven Teares,' slow and contemplative pieces that are interspersed with livelier movements. The composer himself explains that 'The teares which Musicke weeps' can be pleasant; 'neither are teares shed always in sorrow but sometime in joy and gladnesse.'

This work is presented alongside a selection of English lute songs by Dowland and his contemporaries.
